Welcome to the online journalism page. Any journalist should try to utilise and embrace the Internet - whether they like it or not. It is unique in that incorporates the other three forms, television, print and radio (audio) in one place. This makes it a very strong player in journalism today. Below are two news websites I have made during my studies.
Tech Desk
www.thetechdesk.blogspot.com
The Tech Desk blog was first
created in April 2010 for my Multimedia 2 module at university.
The
news blog focuses on all news relating to the web, new technology and gadgets.
Like most news website, Tech Desk utilises all the main social media and
communication features of 2010. A Twitter feed offering regular updates, a
search facility and a special one-minute video news bulletin (known as the
'iBulletin'), which provides a 60 second round up of the latest technology news.
The idea was inspired by BBC Three's 60 second news updates, but with a web
reach. It also included the most searched item of the day on Google for common
interest.
One of the main learning points from Tech Desk was looking at how
to make news profitable. Unfortunately properly sourced and well researched news
cannot be done cheaply so it is necessary for independent journalists in
particular to think about financial implications.

The Student Lounge
www.the-student-lounge.blogspot.com
The Student Lounge blog was first created in
April 2009 for my Multimedia 1 module at university.
This was
my first ever news blog. It's aimed at 17 - 25 year olds who are students,
providing them with a one stop portal for student news. At the time of The
Student Lounge's creation, the Swine Flu pandemic was emerging and dominating
the news agenda globally. The Student Lounge paid particular focus on the virus,
with advert banners promoting protection and a video voxpop of how students are
protecting themselves. The blog generally had a human interest focus, looking at
lives of students and also providing advice to new students on how to manage at
university.
The Student Lounge strived to work on user interaction -
encouraging comment, viewer stories and an opinion poll. The blog also made use
of online facilities such as Google maps to provide more user interaction
as is the way forward in journalism.
